Data Notes Data is from 2009; there is always a 1 year lag time for quality assurance. Last updated January 2011.
Data Source: Center for Health Statistics; 1992-2009.  Annual data is generally available 10 months after the close of the calendar year.  
Measure Definition: The numerator is the number of deaths from breast (female), cervical, and colorectal cancer. The denominator for colorectal cancer is the total number of people in Washington. The denominator for female breast and cervical cancer is the total number of females in Washington. The rates are age-adjusted.
Target Rationale:

Targets:  Breast (female): 20.6 per 100,000 (2020); Cervical: 2.2 per 100,000 (2020); Colorectal: 14.5 per 100,000 (2020).  These targets are from Healthy People 2020.

Relevance: Many premature deaths from breast, colorectal and cervical cancers can be avoided through early screening, detection and treatment.

 Summary Analysis
  • Death rates for breast (female), cervical, and colorectal cancer have decreased steadily from 1992 to 2009. 

  • During that time, there has been a 1.9 percent per year decrease for cervical cancer, 2.3 percent per year decrease for female breast cancer, and 2.5 percent per year decrease for colorectal cancer.

  • Most of the decreases can be attributed to improvements in treatment and earlier diagnoses.
     
  • Death rates do not reflect when the diagnosis was made.
