In 2005, the State Auditor's Office received authority via citizen initiative to conduct performance audits. Performance audits determine whether an agency program is efficiently and effectively delivering the intended results. In contrast, financial or compliance audits use standard procedures and rely on accounting principles to determine the financial health of an organization.
Governor Gregoire and state agencies are committed to performance accountability, and strongly support the use of performance audits as an important tool to improve government. We take the audit suggestions for improvement seriously, and prepare detailed action plans to address any findings. These action plans are published and available to the public at the time the audit report is released.
